Coming Soon - Quiz Night

Saturday 19th September 2015

Preparations for the Quiz Night are in full swing.  A flyer went out last week and teams are starting to register.  You’re welcome to register as a partial team, couple, or individual and we will make up teams of 8.  We are limited to only 12 teams of 8 so be in quick.

Is the Quiz Night BYO or will alcohol be available to buy?
We have applied for a Liquor License to sell wine and beer on the night and hope to get that confirmed soon.  It is not a BYO event.

Why is the Quiz Night R18?
Making the Quiz Night for adults only means a less complicated Liquor License application and more likely it will be approved.

Are the questions all about the movies?
Most of the questions would fall into the trivia or general knowledge category.  They won’t ALL be about movies, but that’s our dress-up theme and there will be some.  

Do we have to dress up in a costume?
No, but there are prizes for the best dressed team and for the best overall costume.  If you’re not a fan of wearing a costume try these alternatives to get into the spirit; get your team to wear a wig (Marilyn Munroe style? Barbie?); make or buy a set of cardboard masks; or wear a style of hat (cowboys?).  Pete’s Emporium is a good place to get ideas from.

What are the prizes?
We are still getting the prize packages together.  Next week more information will go out.  There will be a fantastic prize for the winning team and prizes for costumes and bonus questions too.  

Will there be raffles and auctions?
We have had an amazing response from businesses wanting to donate prizes for the Quiz Night.  We will run both raffles and auctions on the night.  

Why are we doing a Quiz night?
We thought a Quiz night would be a great way to help build the Papakowhai School Community.  Any money that we raise will be used for the establishment of a student garden which will provide many meaningful learning opportunities for our students.

Speaker Night Kathryn Berkett Brainwave Trust

Kathryn Berkett was an inspiring and passionate speaker who educated us all about how the brain works. There were a number of parents and teachers attending the presentation.

One parent was heard to comment that she would like to go back to the 1-3 years with her children knowing what she does now. By the age of 3 years a child's brain will be an average of 1180g of the 1400g it will be as an adult.

An adolescent brain will not be "mature" until 23-25 years old. Even though our adolescent's may look emotionally mature the risk taking part of their brain does not develop sufficiently until their twenties.

One of the best tips for parenting was that we need to make "pictures of what we do want" for our adolescents. By saying to a child "don't spill the water in the glass" they are more likely to do so as we are creating the wrong picture in their head of the water spilling.

Kathryn also talked about the need for our children to take "managed risks" and learn the consequences of their actions. Peer influence is huge for adolescents.

She also stressed the increasing importance that we limit the time on electronic devices before sleep.

End of Year BBQ Get Together

We kicked off the end of year get together next to the new classrooms, in amazing weather, with the school band and food starting at 5. Our school band did a fantastic job. Next band was Spectrum who played a number of their original songs.
A big thank you to our sponsors, Carpet Court (donation of the carpet for raffle), Amalia Maheridis (massage vouchers), Mr Rentals (hamper and free freezer rental), Unilever (iceblocks), Cheryl Ashford (Christmas Cake), Leza Marfell (Christmas Cake) and Annemarie Dunlop (christmas tree mats). A big thank you to Tawa Linden Plunket Toy Library for reducing the bouncy castle fee for us and Papakowhai Kindy for lending us their bouncy castle free. Not to mention all the Home and School helpers who without them the event would not be possible. An especially big thank you to Sue Grazier for all the organising and purchasing for the event.
A decision was made at the Committee meeting to make the bouncy castles and tattoos all free. We also reduced the price of the sausages and had the ham buns as a cheaper option than a hamburger.  The aim of the event was to get the families together with the school.

At 6 Santa gave an appearance and was instantly surrounded. Lots of kids exhibited great values in sharing lollipops with other younger children.




Our third band is pictured above and unfortunately we did not get their band's name but I am sure you know who they are. The fourth band was Shiggaion. All of the bands had a connection to the school and gave their time for free.   Many thanks to them for their great performances.

School BBQ 5th December

ON YOUR MARK! GET SET! BBQ RAIN OR SHINE!
Come and enjoy a night of fun at the Home & School Committee end-of-year school BBQ tomorrow, outside Rimu block. 5pm to 8pm. If the weather is not great the BBQ is still on and we will communicate whether we are in Rimu or the Hall tomorrow.
Leave the cooking to us; ham on the bone, sausages, hamburgers and ice blocks. Plus a range of drinks from $1 to $4. If you have any dietary requirements we are happy to cook your food on the BBQ.
Lots of fun activities; bouncy castle, tattoos, three live bands, lolly scrambles and games for the children.
The bands start at 5pm and the lolly scrambles will be at 6pm. Plus we have a raffle with lots of great prizes; wine from New World Porirua, gift basket from Mr Rental, large rug from Carpet Court, massage vouchers and more. See you there!
